Sarba Mitra ignores DU show-cause notice, to resign from Ducsu in two days

Elected last year, he has faced multiple controversies, including allegedly threatening an elderly man, assaulting street vendors, among others

Dhaka University (DU) executive member of the Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Sarba Mitra Chakma has not responded to a show-cause notice issued by the university on Monday and said he will resign within two days.

The notice was issued over an incident in which several teenagers playing on DU’s central field were reportedly forced to do squats while holding their ears. DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said the notice had the vice chancellor’s approval and that further action would follow after Mitra’s response.

“There is no point in explaining myself to an administration that has failed to see causes for so long,” Mitra said. “So many incidents have taken place over the years—did they see them? Or did they pretend not to see them, despite seeing everything?”

In a Facebook post, he also questioned why the administration had not acted earlier on thefts of bicycles, wallets, and mobile phones from the Central Field and Central Library, unrepaired boundary walls, and employees caught drinking inside the Physical Education building.

Mitra said Wednesday that he would submit his pending work to the Pro VC and Ducsu before resigning. Elected last year, he has faced multiple controversies, including allegedly threatening an elderly man, assaulting street vendors, and forcing children to do squats.

“This decision was not taken out of resentment toward anyone, nor was I provoked. When working becomes difficult—almost impossible—there is no point in holding on to the position,” he said.
