Update : 16 Jan 2026, 03:51 PM

A citizens' condolence meeting in memory of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has begun at the South Plaza of the National Parliament, with current BNP Chairman and her elder son Tarique Rahman in attendance.

The program formally commenced at 3:05pm on Friday, with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran.

Organized at the initiative of members of civil society, the event drew a growing crowd to the parliament area from noon onwards.

Following the Jummah prayers, BNP leaders and activists, along with representatives of various political parties, professional bodies, and civil society organisations, gathered at the venue. Representatives of foreign diplomatic missions have also joined the program.

To enter the condolence meeting venue, organizers have made designated entry cards mandatory. A large number of law enforcement personnel and BNP-appointed volunteers have been deployed at the entrance of the South Plaza.

Entry is permitted only upon presentation of invitation cards. No vehicles, including media vehicles, are being allowed inside the premises without authorized passes.

Earlier, Organizing Committee member Professor Mahbub Ullah said that no political party leaders would deliver speeches from the stage in order to maintain the solemnity of the program. They will remain seated among the audience as invited guests.

Only eminent professionals, researchers, religious representatives, and other prominent figures will speak on the life and contributions of Begum Khaleda Zia.

Civil society organizers have described the event not as a political rally but as “a program of paying tribute and silent presence.” Strict instructions have been issued for participants, including prohibitions on taking selfies, applauding, or standing during the program.
