Former army chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan is set to testify against retired major general Ziaul Ahsan in a crimes against humanity case over more than a hundred enforced disappearances and killings that took place during the Awami League government’s rule.
The information was disclosed on Thursday by Prosecutor Shaikh Mahdi during a press briefing following the day’s proceedings of the International Crimes Tribunal-1.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam also highlighted portions of Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan’s statement given earlier to the investigation officer.
During the hearing on charge framing, senior lawyers Mansurul Haque Chowdhury and Nazneen Nahar appeared on behalf of Ziaul Ahsan. They challenged the three charges brought by the prosecution and sought his discharge from the case, claiming the prosecution had failed to place credible evidence before the tribunal.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the tribunal fixed January 14 for passing its order.
