Jagannath University has decided to postpone the Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and hall elections by six days, now scheduling them for January 6.
The new date was finalized during a special syndicate meeting of the university on Tuesday afternoon.
After the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Rezaul Karim confirmed the information to journalists.
According to the original schedule, JnUCSU voting was supposed to take place on Tuesday. However, following the news of the death of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia early this morning, the elections were temporarily suspended.
Following this decision, tensions rose on campus, with leaders and members of various student organizations, as well as general students, protesting in front of the administrative building, demanding the election be held. Later, they blocked the gates of the vice-chancellor’s office and staged a sit-in.
After several rounds of discussions with the protesting students, the university administration convened a special syndicate meeting. Reviewing the overall situation, the meeting set the new election date as January 6. The JnUCSU Election Commission has announced that an official notification with the revised schedule and detailed instructions for the postponed voting will be released soon.
