National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has said that BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia was steadfast on issues concerning the country’s and nation’s sovereignty.
He made the comment in a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday morning.
In the post, he said her courageous leadership in the anti-autocracy movement guided the people of the country in asserting their democratic rights.
"She played an extraordinary role in establishing parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh and restoring a democratic environment following the mass uprising of the 1990s. Throughout her long political career, she endured imprisonment and many hardships but remained unwavering in her political ideals and commitment to the rights of the people. She was uncompromising on matters of the nation’s sovereignty, the post added.
He further wrote that Begum Khaleda Zia’s contributions and struggle for the establishment of democracy in Bangladesh will surely be remembered. Her long political life devoted to the welfare of the country and its people will serve as an inspiration for future generations.
He added that her passing marks the end of a long and eventful chapter in Bangladesh’s political history. “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.”
He prayed for her soul’s salvation and conveyed deep condolences to her bereaved family and countless followers.
