International Migrants Day (IMD) 2025 is an opportunity to reaffirm migration as a story of resilience, hope, human progress, and development. This year, IMD aligns strategically with the International Dialogue on Migration and the IOM Council’s high-level discussions, linking migration and development and embracing the theme that properly governed migration is a global strategic asset – one that, when managed through effective, inclusive, and evidence-based policies, generates benefits for individuals, communities, and nations alike.
Migration has fueled economic growth, strengthened communities, and supported resilience across origin, transit, and destination countries. Landmark remittance flows projected to be a record USD 685 billion in 2024, migrants’ key role across innovation and enterprise, and their roles in addressing labor shortages and demographic shifts underscore migration’s critical place in the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). In 2025, IMD will spotlight how smarter and more inclusive migration governance can unlock even greater developmental dividends, while meeting the aspirations of people on the move and the needs of societies everywhere.
