Following Saturday evening’s earthquakes, all classes and examinations at Dhaka University and Jagannath University have been suspended till December 6.
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the decision on Saturday evening.
A syndicate meeting, scheduled for 9pm on Saturday, took the decisions.
The syndicate, the university’s highest policy-making body, was convened at the call of Vice-Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan to discuss the emergency situation.
Due to Friday’s 5.7-magnitude earthquake, at least 10 dormitories at Dhaka University have developed new cracks in walls, and plaster has fallen off. Around 22 students were injured and received treatment, while many others suffered sprained ankles, loss of consciousness, and panic. Additionally, six students were injured in Saturday’s earthquake in Dhaka.
At another emergency meeting on Saturday, it was decided to immediately inspect every room in Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall, as well as older and vulnerable buildings across other halls, with a Buet expert team present to monitor and assess the post-earthquake situation.
A similar decision was taken at Jagannath University as well, according to media reports.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Rezaul Karim said that repeated earthquakes in the capital have created panic among students and others.
