Students of Jahangirnagar University have staged a protest rally condemning the alleged secret agreement to hand over the Chittagong Port to a foreign company.
On Wednesday afternoon, around 5:30pm, students under the banner "Nipiron-er Birodhe Jahangirnagar" (Jahangirnagar Against Oppression) brought out a procession from the university’s Murad Chattar and marched towards the Dhaka–Aricha Highway near the university’s main gate.
They later held a demonstration on one side of the highway. Students from various departments participated in the program.
Faria Zaman, general secretary of the Jahangirnagar Photography Society, said: “Recently, the Yunus government issued a notice. You might think we oppose any foreign agreement, but that is not the case. When signing deals with any country, we must ensure how beneficial it is for us. And this proposed 30-year agreement—its details should be made fully public.”
She added: “We want to make it clear that handing over such a crucial port to a foreign power could put our sovereignty at risk. It could harm our national security. We are deeply concerned because we do not know the full details of the deal.”
Sajib Ahmed Jenich, organizer of the Socialist Students’ Front, JU unit, said: “The port is our national asset. We have the capacity to operate our own resources. So why should we hand over port operations to foreigners? We will not allow our port to be plundered through an unequal agreement with foreign forces.”
He further said: “Where is Jucsu, where is Ducsu? Today, when our national resources are at stake, they remain silent. All we see are celebrations and sweet distributions."
