The death sentence handed down to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will remain a milestone in world history, said Nahid Islam, convenor of the National Citizen Party (NCP).
He called for the immediate implementation of the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict, urging the government to bring Hasina back from India within one month to carry out the sentence.
He also demanded the execution of the death sentence against former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Nahid Islam made the comments on Monday afternoon at a press conference held at the NCP’s central office in Banglamotor, arranged in response to the tribunal’s judgment sentencing the ousted prime minister to death for crimes against humanity.
He said that all Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League members, and other “fascist collaborators,” along with the accused government officials, must also be brought to justice without delay.
“The judicial process that has begun must continue. The remaining cases must be adjudicated quickly, and the sentences must be implemented. Those already in prison must have their verdicts executed promptly,” he said.
Recalling the victims of the July uprising, he added: “The day our brother Abu Sayed was martyred, we swore that we would ensure justice for his killing. Today, we have received justice for the atrocities committed against the thousands who were killed or injured during the July Uprising. Over the past 16 years, under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, the Awami League inflicted oppression on the people—enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, human rights violations, the Pilkhana massacre, the Shapla massacre, and the July mass killings. Today, we have received verdicts for these crimes. We welcome this judgment."
The NCP convenor said they would not be satisfied until the verdict is executed. “We will only find peace when we hear, in our lifetimes, that Sheikh Hasina has been hanged and the sentence carried out. Only then will the souls of the martyrs of the July revolution find peace, along with their families and the injured survivors,” he said, reiterating the demand for swift implementation.
Calling for Hasina’s immediate repatriation from Delhi, Nahid Islam said: “The interim government must take proper and effective action. We have learned that the government’s security adviser is visiting India. We hope and demand that he returns with Sheikh Hasina.”
