The raid was conducted as several people were gathering at the location to join the banned Awami League’s November 13 program

Police conducted a raid at the Chittagong residence of former Awami League education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel on Wednesday afternoon, detaining seven individuals from the house.

The operation took place between 3:30pm and 4pm at his residence in the Chashma Hill area near Gate No 2 in the city.

The identities of those detained were not immediately known.

Following the raid, police seized the house’s CCTV DVR box for verification. Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury is the eldest son of the late ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation.

According to police, the raid was conducted based on a Facebook post claiming that several people were gathering at the location to join the banned Awami League’s November 13 program.

In the same area, Mohibul’s younger brother Borhan and BNP leader Niaz previously ran a restaurant named “Café Milano,” which has remained closed since August 5 last year. However, they reportedly continued selling food online.

The seven detainees claimed to have worked at that restaurant, a detail police also verified.

Pahartali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Sulaiman told Dhaka Tribune: “We received information that some Chhatra League activists were gathering here to create unrest centering the Awami League’s November 13 lockdown. Based on that, we conducted the operation and detained seven people. They are being verified and interrogated at the station. Legal action will be taken if any involvement is found.”
