Rope marks found on his hands have raised suspicions over whether it was a suicide or a murder, say police

The body of a Chhatra Dal leader was found in a flat in Chandrima Housing, Mohammadpur, Dhaka.

The deceased was identified as Sabbir Hasan, 27, joint convener of the Mohammadpur Thana unit of Chhatra Dal, BNP's student wing.

According to police, initial evidence suggests that Sabbir committed suicide by hanging himself. However, rope marks found on his hands have raised suspicions over whether it was a suicide or a murder.

Mohammadpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Rafique said: “We recovered the body from Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital after being informed around 10am. There are marks of hanging on his neck, along with rope marks on his hands. Although it initially appears to be suicide, we are investigating whether it could be a case of murder.”

Witnesses told police that Sabbir had been living in the Chandrima Housing flat as a bachelor with three to four others. In the morning, one of his flatmates went downstairs to buy breakfast.

Upon returning, he found Sabbir’s door locked from the inside. After repeated calls went unanswered, they broke open the door and found him lying on the floor with a rope around his neck. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police said the other flatmates are being questioned.

Investigators added that the autopsy report will play a crucial role in determining the actual cause of death.
