Law enforcement agencies have arrested four individuals in connection with the gruesome murder of scrap trader Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, 39, near Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital (Mitford) in Old Dhaka.
The incident occurred around 6pm on Wednesday when Sohag was beaten and hacked to death on the paved road adjacent to Gate 3 of the hospital.
Confirming the arrests on Friday, Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Media Wing, Mohammad Talebur Rahman, said the killing was the result of a clash between two rival groups over control of the local scrap business.
Police from Kotwali police station rushed to the scene shortly after the incident, brought the situation under control, and recovered the body. It was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Later, Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case with Kotwali police station.
Soon after the incident, police collected CCTV footage from nearby areas and launched an investigation.
Raids were conducted at various locations across the capital, leading to the arrest of two named accused—Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41 and Tarek Rahman Robin, 22.
A foreign pistol was recovered from Robin during his arrest.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) also conducted operations and arrested two more suspects, bringing the total number of arrests to four.
Legal action is underway against all arrestees, the police official added.
