Formal charges have been submitted in the case over the murder of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayed in Rangpur during the July movement last year.

In this case, 30 people have been named as accused.

On Monday, the prosecution submitted the formal charges at the International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. Later, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed this information.

Earlier, on June 15, the International Crimes Tribunal ordered the submission of the investigation report by July 14 in the case over the murder of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayed during the July mass uprising in Rangpur.

At the same time, the tribunal set June 26 for the hearing of this case. This order was given by a three-judge bench led by International Crimes Tribunal Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, Prosecutors Gazi Monowar Hossain, BM Sultan Mahmud, and SM Moinul Karim appeared for the prosecution in court. Advocates Rashedul Haque Khokon and Delwar Hossain Sohel represented the accused.

The prosecution informed the tribunal that Abu Sayed was killed by police gunfire during the anti-discrimination student movement. Former SI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujon Chandra Roy were directly involved in this incident.

In addition, university proctor Shariful Islam and Chhatra League activist Imran Chowdhury Akash, along with others, aided and incited the incident. Four of the accused in the case were already under arrest in connection with other cases.

Meanwhile, following the tribunal’s order, on June 26, the investigation agency handed over the final investigation report on the Abu Sayed murder case to the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal. The report revealed the involvement of 30 people in Abu Sayed’s murder.

Amid the quota reform movement in government jobs that began on July 1, 2024, Abu Sayed was killed by police gunfire in Rangpur on July 16, 2024. On that day, when Sayed had his hands spread wide, he was shot — footage of which was broadcast by the media, sparking outrage among students and the public.
