Ganosamhati Andolon’s Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki has termed the recent meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman as a “positive development,” especially in light of discussions around advancing the election timeline and accelerating justice and reforms.
In a statement on Friday, Saki said that his party has, from the outset, urged the interim government to take decisions on critical issues — including justice, electoral reforms, and the election itself — through inclusive discussions with all stakeholders.
He said: “We welcome the ongoing political dialogues, including the meeting in London with Tarique Rahman. This is a positive initiative.”
Saki recalled that after Dr Yunus’s pre-Eid statement, his party had said an election in early April would not be realistic. He now hopes the recent dialogue will pave the way for national consensus on reforms as well as the election process.
“We believe this meeting will lead to more focused attention on reforms and build consensus among political parties,” Saki added.
During the meeting with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus said that if all preparations are completed, the national election could be held in the week before the holy month of Ramadan in 2026 (ie, in the first half of February).
This information was revealed in a joint statement issued after the meeting.
However, in that case, sufficient progress must be made by then in terms of reforms and justice, added the statement.
The meeting began at 9am local time (2pm Bangladesh time) on Friday at The Dorchester Hotel in London, and concluded at 10:30am (3:30pm Bangladesh time).
