'Around two thousand people sacrificed their lives, not just for an election', says the joint convener of the National Citizen Party

Abdul Hannan Masud, the joint convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) said that if Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus meets with Tulip Siddiq, who is allegedly involved in the killing of students and the public, as well as in money laundering, it would be a betrayal of the July uprising.

Masud made the comment on Monday during a discussion with local residents who had lost their homes to Meghna River erosion, held at the Komolar Dighi Par tourism spot in Char Ishwar union of Hatiya, Bangla Tribune reports.

He said: "Since 1971, countries like Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia have gained independence. Malaysia got an honest and dedicated leader like Mahathir Mohamad. But we got a leader like Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, under whose rule this country suffered a famine."

Referring to India's aggressive stance towards Bangladesh, he said: "After independence, several changes in leadership have occurred in our country. Among them, only Major Zia truly envisioned transformation. India's aggressive behavior didn't allow Major Zia to survive. The fall of Sheikh Hasina is not just the fall of the Awami League, but also the fall of Indian dominance in Bangladesh."

Speaking about the July uprising, Masud said: "Around two thousand people sacrificed their lives, not just for an election. Yunus has announced a roadmap for elections. Elections will take place in this country, but only after ensuring a level playing field. That will only be possible when all weapons are recovered from every household and all armed individuals are arrested."

Mentioning his birthplace, Hatiya, he said: "Many ask me why I still care about Hatiya despite being active in national politics. I tell them I go to Hatiya to share in the sorrows and hardships of its people. For a long time, Hatiya had turned into a den of terrorism. I am thinking about Hatiya to transform it from a den of terror into a livable place."

The event was chaired by former Hatiya College teacher Mofizur Rahman and was attended by teachers from various educational institutions in Hatiya, as well as local social and political figures.
