More interest in smaller cattle as demand for larger ones dips

Several buyers said large cattle prices are slightly lower this year due to reduced demand

Update : 04 Jun 2025, 09:45 PM

Jamal Islam brought seven cattle from Pabna to the capital’s Bosila Haat. He is asking for Tk2.5 lakhs to Tk3 lakhs, depending on the cattle. He has sold only one till Wednesday afternoon.

Jamal told Dhaka Tribune: “I just want to make around ten thousand per cattle and go home. However, I do not think I can sell all by Saturday.”

Several buyers informed the correspondent that the price of larger cattle is slightly lower than the previous year, due to lower demand.

However, the sellers are asking higher prices for smaller cattle, according to buyers.

Ahnaf, a resident of Mohammadpur, bought a cattle costing Tk1.4 lakhs. He told Dhaka Tribune: “Previous year, it would have cost a little more.”

Last year, cattle haats were trending online, where cattle of a special breed reached even Tk1 crore.

This year, the sellers have not been doing any promotion of these super cattle yet.

Even the goat market has not reached the excitement of last year yet. The highest price for a goat is around Tk35 thousand, as opposed to the record high sale of the Tk15 lakh goat last year.

Mujahidul also brought 30 goats from his firm at Pabna on Tuesday. Till Wednesday afternoon, he has not sold any.

"Nothing I can do except cry,” he told Dhaka Tribune.

He remarked that customers are not even willing to pay the money that he has spent to raise the goats.

This year, two city corporations have leased 20 cattle haats across the capital.
