Online shopping to get costlier

VAT on commissions earned by online platforms rises to 15%

Online shoppers may have to pay more from the next fiscal year as the government moves to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) on e-commerce transactions.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has proposed raising the VAT on commissions earned from product sales through online platforms to 15%, up from the existing 5%.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed presented the proposed budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, amounting to Tk7,89,999 crore, in a televised speech on Monday.
