Bangladesh observes International UN Peacekeepers Day

  • National and UN leaders issued messages honoring the sacrifices of peacekeepers
  • A peacekeepers’ run, media programs, and publications marked public participation

Like other countries around the world, Bangladesh observed the International United Nations Peacekeepers Day on Thursday with due solemnity.

On this day, the exceptional contributions of peacekeepers from all participating countries in UN peacekeeping operations are remembered with deep respect.

To mark the occasion, separate messages were issued by the president, the chief adviser, the Foreign Affairs adviser, the chiefs of the three services, the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division, the inspector general of police, the secretary-general of the United Nations, and the UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh.

As part of the Peacekeepers Day program, a reception was held at 11am on Thursday at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center to honor injured peacekeepers. The Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, was present as the chief guest at the reception.

The event at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran. Following that, a one-minute silence was observed in honor of those who embraced martyrdom during peacekeeping missions. A special presentation on UN peacekeeping operations was also arranged at the event.

The welcome speech was delivered by the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis.

Additional speeches were delivered by the Acting Foreign Secretary, Md Ruhul Alam Siddique.

Furthermore, as the most senior peacekeeper, the Chief of Bangladesh Army, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, also delivered remarks. Finally, the finance adviser delivered his speech and interacted via VTC (video teleconference) with members of the armed forces and police personnel engaged in peacekeeping missions across various countries.

The event was attended by members of the Advisory Council, senior secretaries and secretaries from different ministries, senior officials of various UN agencies in Bangladesh, media personalities, and distinguished senior military and civilian officials.

Earlier, at 6:15am, the day’s program began with the “Peacekeepers Run/Rally 2025” held in the Old Airport Mosque area in Tejgaon, Dhaka, and in other divisional cities.

The Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, inaugurated the “Peacekeepers Run/Rally 2025” as the chief guest.

Participants in the peacekeepers' run included the peacekeepers from the armed forces and police, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives from various UN agencies in Bangladesh, and nominated representatives from inter-force organizations.

To highlight the significance of the day, a special journal and dedicated supplements in various national dailies were published. In addition, special talk shows are being broadcast on Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar (Radio), and several private television channels.
