Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain on Wednesday expressed his condolences over the death of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research at the University of Dhaka and publication secretary of the AF Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra Dal.
In a post from his verified Facebook account, Asif pledged that those involved in the killing would be brought to justice swiftly.
In the post, he wrote: “Around 2019, during protests against guest room torture on campus or for any legitimate student demand, Shammo was one of the faces we always saw with us. Moshiur Amin Shubho and Shammo would always come together.
"From his very first year, Shammo stood firmly against injustice and was an incredibly polite young man. Shammo is no longer with us today, which is truly painful to accept.”
He added that three individuals have been arrested so far.
Asif continued: “The killers will certainly be brought to justice. But not just the individuals, the crime syndicates operating around the park, drug networks, and the unsafe environment of the park are equally responsible for this incident.
"Suhrawardy Udyan was supposed to be a place of peace, but for a long time, it has turned into a place of fear due to illegal shops, drug dealing, and various criminal gangs.”
Asif further wrote: “I have already spoken with the DU administration, the Ministry of Public Works, DMP, and other authorities concerned. Based on the university administration's recommendations, the park will very soon be transformed into a safe space. I will personally take responsibility for turning Suhrawardy Udyan into a secure place. I seek the cooperation of university students and the administration in this regard.”
“We are sorry, Shammo, that we could not ensure your safety. But it is now our responsibility to ensure that nothing like this happens to anyone else again,” he concluded.
