Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Tuesday said that the police cannot be a killer force and may only be equipped with shotguns at best to maintain law and order.
“We can at best have shotguns. This is the natural expectation,” he said while distributing prizes among the winners of the IGP Cup Cricket Championship 2024–25 at the Police Cricket Club ground of the Police Staff College in Mirpur.
The police chief said firearms like rifles should not be used by the police as bullets can certainly kill.
“Police can use non-lethal weapons in maintaining law and order. Using non-lethal weapons is the practice all over the world,” he said.
He added that a decision in this regard will be made after a meeting with all stakeholders.
The Industrial Police cricket team became champions after defeating the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) by two wickets in the final. The final match was held in the T20 format.
