Law Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul on Wednesday raised a question regarding accountability, asking how the government intends to demonstrate responsibility to the people if the national election is held without prosecuting those responsible for the killings during the July uprising.

"If we hold elections without any trials, how will we show accountability to the people—and to ourselves?" he told reporters in front of the state guest house Jamuna, following a meeting between the BNP delegation and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.

Dr Nazrul noted that over a thousand youths sacrificed their lives and around 50,000 to 60,000 people were physically affected.

He emphasized that holding trials for the perpetrators is one of the public’s key demands.

There have been widespread calls for the swift execution of trials related to the killings committed during the July uprising.

In response to a question, Dr Nazrul clarified that there has been no delay in the trial proceedings against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

He also mentioned that the government is taking steps to establish an additional tribunal to expedite the process.
