The allegation of Meghna Alam being abducted is not accurate, according to the DMP

Update : 11 Apr 2025, 01:52 PM

Meghna Alam, model and winner of Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020 has been taken into custody on charges of conspiring to undermine national security, attempting to deteriorate inter-state relations by spreading falsehoods about prominent individuals, and trying to cause economic harm to the country, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The information was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday afternoon by Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, reports Bangla Tribune.

The statement clarified that the allegation of Meghna Alam being abducted is not accurate.

However, it added that she retains the right to seek legal recourse.

Earlier, a Dhaka court ordered Meghna Alam to be jailed for 30 days under the detention act.

The order was issued on Thursday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah following a hearing.

According to court sources, Meghna Alam was presented before the court by Detective Branch (DB) police around 10:30pm. The court granted the DB’s petition and issued the detention order.

The order states that, in the interest of public safety and law and order, Meghna Alam is to be detained for 30 days under the powers granted by the Special Powers Act, 1974. She was later transferred to Kashimpur jail.

The day before, on Wednesday evening, Meghna had been live on Facebook when, according to her, individuals identifying themselves as police broke down the door of her residence. The livestream, which lasted over 12 minutes, ended abruptly and was later deleted.

Under the detention act, the government can detain a person for a specified period without formal court proceedings, usually in the interest of public or state security and maintaining law and order.
