Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Railways, has said that Bangladesh Railway operates at a loss, with an expenditure of Tk2.5 for every Tk1 earned.

He attributed this primarily to corruption and waste within the railway system.

However, the government is taking effective measures to address these issues.

He made these remarks on Wednesday during the inauguration ceremony of a new pair of commuter trains on the Dhaka-Narsingdi-Bhairab Bazar-Narsingdi-Dhaka route at Kamalapur Railway Station in the capital.

He further said that despite railway fares being relatively low, many passengers evade payment.

"If you notice anyone not paying the fare, please bring it to our attention. If losses continue to rise, we will have no option but to reduce service quality,” he warned.

The adviser further said that Professor Yunus has emphasized the need to extend development beyond Dhaka.

"We seek development where no individual’s name is inscribed on plaques. Our goal is to usher in an era of nameplate-free progress,” he asserted.

Regarding stoppages for the new commuter train, he mentioned that they would be determined based on passenger demand analysis.

He also noted that if everyone insists on having a stoppage near their home, it would delay the train’s journey, causing inconvenience to other passengers.

The event was attended by Bangladesh Railway’s Director General Md Afzal Hossain, along with other senior officials.
