A heartfelt memorial was held at the Bishwo Shahitto Kendro in Dhaka to honor the late Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University.
Organized by the Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism Alumni Association (DUMCJAA), the event brought together former students, faculty members, alumni, and family members to celebrate the life and legacy of a man who left an indelible mark on education and journalism.
Speakers at the event shared personal memories and reflections on Professor Siddique’s life, highlighting his dedication, leadership, and compassion.
Md Abdul Mannan, deputy director of the University Grants Commission, said: “He dedicated his life to helping others, never expecting anything in return. While many benefited from his kindness, he also endured hardships caused by others. I pray for his eternal peace.”
Journalist Pradip Chowdhury addressed the controversies surrounding Siddique’s funeral, stating: “Many people were deeply shocked by what happened centering his funeral at Dhaka University campus. We will remember sir for his meaningful work, and he continues to live on in the hearts of many.”
Sharmin Ahmed, a DU faculty member, added: “Some criticized him without ever knowing him personally. He had a strong personality. May Allah grant him Jannah.”
Ranjan Karmakar, former general secretary of the DU Alumni Association, recalled Siddique’s guidance in shaping alumni initiatives, while Associate Professor Saiful Haque spoke of his mentorship, saying: “Most of what I have achieved in my life began with his guidance.”
Professor Siddique’s younger brother, Atik Ullah Siddique, shared touching childhood memories, describing their journey from Sirajganj to Dhaka and his brother’s unwavering commitment to family.
“Despite his busy schedule, he always stayed connected with every family member. He never rested before 3 or 3:30am and kept his phone on at all times,” said Atik.
Former Secretary Abu Alam Shahid Khan expressed disappointment over the handling of Siddique’s funeral by DU authorities, vowing: “One day, we will hold a grand event at Bot Tola in front of Kolabhaban in his honor, InshaAllah.”
Presiding over the event, Alumni Association President Shamsul Haque said: “I never saw him angry or resentful. To us, he was nothing but good. May Allah grant him Jannah.”
The memorial, moderated by organizing secretary Shakil Hasan, was attended by DUMCJAA leaders, including Mir Mashroor Zaman, Rana Hasan, Ali Asif Shawon, Rafiqul Islam, Mehedi Hasan, Mohiuddin Muzahid Mahi, Lopa Hossain among others.
