Locals in Bhola’s Char Fasson have brutally assaulted a man named Shahjahan Mintiz, 40, over theft allegations, severing his thumb, breaking his limbs, and gouging out both eyes.

The incident took place on Sunday morning in Char Arkarmi village under Nazrul Nagar Union of Dakshin Aicha police station.

Mintiz, a resident of the village, was accused by locals of being a habitual thief.

Dakshin Aicha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ershadul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the incident but said no arrests had been made.

According to locals, Mintiz had a long history of theft, and his father, also accused of theft, died in prison years ago.

On Sunday morning, residents spotted Mintiz near his home, chased him down, and attacked him. During the assault, they gouged out his eyes, severed his thumb, and broke his limbs.

A village police member later rescued him and took him to Char Fasson Upazila Health Complex, from where he was referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

However, Mintiz’s family claims he was wrongfully targeted.

His wife, Fatema Begum, alleged: *Maulana Lokman Hossain’s son Md Sakib and his associates carried out this attack in a planned manner.”

Md Sakib denied involvement, saying: “Mintiz is a professional thief and the leader of a gang. Locals caught him, beat him up, and gouged out his eyes. I had nothing to do with it.”

Dr Riaz Uddin, the duty doctor at Char Fasson Upazila Health Complex, said: “Mintiz’s thumb was cut off, his limbs were broken, and his eyes were gouged out. He has been sent to Dhaka for better treatment.”

OC Ershadul Haque Bhuiyan said: *“Upon receiving information, we rescued him and sent him to the hospital. Further legal action will be taken.”
