Govt has successfully controlled every mob disrupting public life, says Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury

Update : 17 Feb 2025, 07:02 PM

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday urged everyone to remain vigilant about the motives behind various mobs.

"We have successfully controlled every mob disrupting public life. Different groups are creating disturbances over various issues and it is our responsibility to manage them. We all must stay cautious and understand who is causing trouble and why," he said.

The home adviser made these remarks while addressing concerns about unrest caused by a group under the banner of "Touhidi Janata".

His comments came after attending the 30th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) and the celebration of "Bangladesh Coast Guard Day-2025" as the chief guest at its headquarters in Agargaon.

Regarding passport issuance, the adviser announced that police verification has been lifted to ease public suffering.

"We have been considering removing police verification for a long time. Now, we have provided relief to the public," he said.

Addressing concerns about Rohingyas obtaining Bangladeshi passports, he reassured that it would not be easy, as passports cannot be issued without voter identity cards.

"We are ensuring that Rohingyas do not receive national identity cards. Those who have already obtained them will be scrutinized," he added.

On border security, the adviser commended the Coast Guard’s role in securing riverine and coastal areas.

"Despite occasional issues along the Myanmar border, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Coast Guard are handling them effectively," he said.

He also noted that fishermen from neighbouring countries sometimes enter Bangladeshi waters and take fish illegally, but the Coast Guard is addressing the issue efficiently.

"Our borders are fully under control. We have no issues along the frontier," he affirmed.

Describing corruption as a major challenge for Bangladesh, the adviser acknowledged progress under the interim government.

"Corruption has significantly decreased in the last six months, though it has not yet reached a tolerable level. If we can further reduce corruption, all sectors will improve," he said.

Senior Home Secretary Nasimul Ghani attended the event as the special guest, while BCG Director General Rear Admiral Md Ziaul Hoque presided over the function.
