Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the chief adviser has directed authorities to bring those involved in bank robberies under the law.
Shafiqul made the statement on Sunday during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium.
He said: “In a meeting with top banking officials, Prof Yunus emphasized that those involved in bank looting and those with specific allegations against them must be brought under the law as soon as possible. Those responsible have essentially stolen the money of the Bangladeshi people. No matter what, they must face legal action.”
The press secretary continued: "During the meeting, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur said all assets of S Alam in Bangladesh have been attached. Actions have also been taken against Nagad. Discussions were held regarding the assets that have been transferred abroad.
"He further informed that a team from the United Kingdom had recently visited Bangladesh. Now, a team from Switzerland has arrived. Bangladesh is also in discussions with the US and Canada on how to recover the money that has been taken out of the country. The central bank governor provided a detailed explanation regarding this matter."
Shafiqul, quoting Dr Ahsan H Mansur, said: “Twelve individuals involved in looting the banking system and transferring money abroad have been identified. We are investigating how they moved the money.”
