A total of 83 people were arrested in Gazipur during “Operation Devil Hunt”, police confirmed on Sunday morning.
Among them, 40 were arrested from five police stations in Gazipur district, while 43 were arrested from eight police stations in the city.
Many of the arrestees are reported to be leaders and activists of the Awami League.
Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Taherul Haque Chauhan said that 43 people were arrested across eight police stations in Gazipur city. The identities of the arrestees were not immediately disclosed.
In the district, Sreepur police station duty officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Sujan Kumar Pandit confirmed the arrest of Sreepur Upazila Jubo League’s vice-president on Saturday night.
Kapasia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain said that 11 people were arrested in the upazila, including former Toke Union Awami League president Selim Hossain, former Rayed Union Chhatra League president Ruhul Amin, Kapasia upazila Jubo League member Shahadat Hossain, and UP member Sahab Uddin, son of Cherag Ali.
In addition, Joydebpur OC Abdul Halim confirmed nine arrests in Sadar upazila, while Kaliakoir OC Riyad Mahmud and Kaliganj OC Alauddin reported three and seven arrests, respectively.
Among the arrestees are Awami League leaders, including presidents and secretaries of different party units.
Gazipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Chowdhury Jaber Sadek said that the GMP, along with the army and RAB, conducted overnight operations on Saturday, leading to the arrests.
According to GMP Additional Commissioner Taherul Haque Chauhan, 18 of the 43 city arrests were linked to the recent attack on students at the ancestral home of former liberation war affairs minister Advocate AKM Mozammel Haque in Dhirashram. The remaining 25 were arrested as part of the ongoing operation.
