TIB criticizes govt's inaction amid nationwide violence, calls for rule of law

Only through adherence to national and international laws can the dream of a 'new Bangladesh' be fulfilled, said TIB’s Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed deep concern over the recent unusual vandalism and violence that took place in Dhanmondi 32 and across the country over the past two days.

The organization has criticized the government’s passive stance in addressing the situation, which has been limited to issuing statements.

TIB believes that such a response is insufficient for maintaining democratic progress, good governance, and national stability.

They emphasized the need for effective government action to control and prevent the crisis, rather than merely issuing statements.

TIB’s Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman, urged everyone to respect the rule of law and avoid destructive actions.

He said: "It is undeniable that under the authoritarian regime driven by the boundless lust for partisanship and dynastic rule, the greatest irreparable damage to the ideals of Bangabandhu, the Liberation War, and the spirit of the War of Independence has been caused by the dictator Sheikh Hasina and her collaborators, who are accused of genocide. The widespread frustration of the people, who have been victims of multiple rights violations, has only intensified due to the shameless and conspiratorial propaganda of the fugitive Sheikh Hasina and her domestic and foreign associates.

"However, the widespread vandalism and violence that has erupted across the country, in retaliation and revenge, is unacceptable. It will not send any positive message about a stable Bangladesh post-July uprising," he added.

He further pointed out that despite prior announcements of violent agendas, both law enforcement agencies and the military, who were supposed to assist in the government's actions, showed alarming indifference and failure in taking preventive measures.

Following the events, the government's attempt to evade responsibility with statements like "unwanted and unexpected" is also concerning, he added.

He raised the question of how active and effective the government and related institutions were in controlling the situation, which is critical in ensuring stability.

Dr Iftekharuzzaman warned that such a situation might create more opportunities for the revival of authoritarian forces, which could obstruct the path to achieving the goal of a "new Bangladesh."

He emphasized that only through adherence to national and international laws, and not through vengeful mob justice, can the dream of a "new Bangladesh" be fulfilled.

Moreover, he called on the government and state authorities to ensure democratic rights, protect individuals from harassment, and work towards tolerance and cooperation with all stakeholders.
