The nameplate of Jagannath University’s (JnU) only women’s hall, “Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall,” was removed on Thursday afternoon.
Students have proposed new names for the hall, including “Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani Hall” and “Felani Hall.”
However, a final decision on the new name has not yet been made.
Naima Akter Rita, a student from the Department of Islamic Studies, said that renaming the hall had been a longstanding demand from students.
She added that after the university’s administrative situation stabilized, they formally raised the issue, and the administration took it seriously.
She further mentioned that several name suggestions were made, with the administration expressing preference for “Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani Hall,” which is expected to be finalized.
Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim, confirmed that the renaming is taking place in response to students’ demands. He also noted that a committee had already been formed to oversee the process, and they are actively working on it. A final decision is expected within the coming week.
