How is Khaleda Zia’s health progressing in London?

She has been spending time at home with family members

Update : 26 Jan 2025, 07:29 PM

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is currently at complete rest, staying on the ground floor of her son Tarique Rahman's house in Kingston, London.

A source close to Tarique, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Khaleda is unable to walk, although her physical condition remains stable.

After being discharged from the hospital on Friday night, she has been spending time at home with family members.

Upon her arrival in London, she was admitted to the hospital directly from the airport, which initially prevented her from spending time with her relatives at home.

During her hospital stay, her son, both daughters-in-law, and granddaughters provided her with constant support.

Now back home, Khaleda Zia is enjoying quality time with her family and eating home-cooked meals.

Her son, Tarique Rahman, and his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, are taking care of her around the clock.

Arafat Rahman Koko's wife, Sharmila Rahman Shithi, is also staying nearby and assisting in her care. Being close to her three granddaughters has significantly lifted Khaleda’s spirits.

According to the source, the former prime minister remains under medical supervision and may need to visit the hospital again for further check-ups.

When asked about her possible return to Bangladesh, the BNP leader said that discussions regarding her return have not yet reached an advanced stage.

Tarique Rahman and his family are fully informed about her treatment plan and any decisions concerning her return, but they prefer to keep such matters private.

Sources said that since her arrival in London, the medical team has not made any major changes to her treatment, aside from conducting routine health check-ups and adjusting the dosage and names of some medications.

The former prime minister of Bangladesh is currently receiving treatment for liver, kidney, diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis, and heart conditions through medication.

Given her age and health condition, a liver transplant is not being considered at this time.

Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Khaleda Zia's physician and a BNP standing committee member, has repeatedly informed reporters that Professor John Patrick Kennedy of The London Clinic, along with other doctors, have praised her strong morale.

They have also commended the treatment provided by Bangladeshi doctors.

Since arriving in London, Khaleda Zia has been enjoying the company of her son, daughters-in-law, and granddaughters, which has contributed positively to her mental well-being.

Her current physical condition is reported to be good and stable.

Meanwhile, when contacted, BNP Chairperson's advisor and UK BNP Founding President Mahidur Rahman, along with UK BNP president MA Malik, declined to comment on her treatment or plans to return to Bangladesh, citing adherence to doctors' recommendations.
