A 24-year-old Bangladeshi man was shot dead by assailants in South Africa’s Imphuzi area on Saturday night.
The deceased has been identified as Amzad Hossain, a resident of Chittagong.
The incident took place at a shop in Gova Supermarket where Amzad worked.
Hailing from Mirsarai upazila’s Durgapur union, Amzad was the only son of Rabiul Hossain Hora Mia. He had been working at the shop for two years, after moving to South Africa to support his family.
Reports indicate Amzad returned to South Africa recently after a brief trip home. On Saturday night, while alone at the shop, he was shot and killed. No money was stolen from the shop.
South Africa-based businessman Abdul Haque confirmed that Amzad was shot at around 1:30am.
His body is currently being kept at a hospital for post-mortem, and it will take a few days for the legal procedures to be completed before repatriation.
Abu Sufian Biplob, chairman of the Durgapur Union Parishad, expressed his condolences, calling it a tragic loss for the community.
