Man shoots pregnant girlfriend with stolen police firearm

Shahida Islam Rafa, two and a half months pregnant, was allegedly shot dead by her boyfried, Touhid Sheikh Tanmoy, on the Dhaka-Mawa Highway in Munshiganj on Saturday morning after she pressured him to marry her. 

The firearm used in the murder was reportedly stolen from Dhaka’s Wari police station on August 5, according to Munshiganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar.

SP Shamsul confirmed this information during a press conference held at the Munshiganj SP office on Tuesday.

After killing Shahida, the accused attempted to flee to Monpura Island in Bhola. Munshiganj district Detective Police (DB) arrested Touhid early Monday from launch in Bhola, using advanced technology to trace his location.

Based on Touhid's confession, the murder weapon was recovered Monday from under the Bailey Bridge in South Keraniganj. 

Shahida’s mother, Jarina Begum, filed a murder case on Saturday night, naming Touhid Sheikh Tanmoy as the prime suspect.

Shahida lived with her family in Dhaka's Wari area. She was the daughter of deceased Motaleb from Mymensingh Sadar Upazila and had two brothers and three sisters.

Police recovered Shahida’s bullet-ridden body Saturday morning from Munshiganj’s Sreenagar area, near the Dhaka-Mawa Highway.
