The Editors Council has expressed deep concern over the growing incidents of mob justice and attacks targeting media institutions in Bangladesh and urged to the government to take strict action against these activities.
The council has issued a statement in this regard on Tuesday.
“Recently, incidents of sit-ins, attacks, and vandalism have occurred in front of the offices of leading national dailies like Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. Over the past few days, some individuals have attempted to create disorder by staging protests in front of Prothom Alo's main office in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka. Later, law enforcement agencies dispersed them. However, the security of these institutions is still under threat.”
The Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) has also expressed concern and condemned these incidents.
Meanwhile, the press wing of the Chief Adviser and the Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Nahid Islam, condemned such events and signaled legal action, which the Editors' Council sees as a positive step.
The Editors Council believes that if anyone disagrees with the news or editorial policies of a newspaper, they are free to express their intellectual stance and views through any platform.
“However, attempts to create chaos in this manner are disrupting the practice and environment of journalism.”
The Editors Council strongly condemns such incidents and urges the government to take strict action against mob justice in media and other institutions.
It also requests all parties to refrain from activities that are detrimental to the freedom of the press.
