Mohammad Murad Islam, who was shot during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has been sent to Thailand for advanced medical treatment.
On Wednesday at 11:30am, a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, carrying him to Bangkok.
Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Dr Md Abu Jafor, bid him farewell at the airport.
Doctors have said that robotic physiotherapy is necessary to restore mobility in Murad’s limbs.
As such facilities are unavailable in Bangladesh, he is being sent to Thailand's Vejthani Hospital for treatment.
Murad was working as a manager at a café in Gulshan, Dhaka. On July 18, while returning home after work around 9:00pm, he was injured in a police shooting near the Water Tank area in Mirpur’s Senpara.
Several others were injured in the incident, and two people lost their lives on the spot.
Murad, however, survived as the bullet entered the right side of his neck and exited through the left side.
Initially, he was taken to Al-Helal Specialized Hospital and later transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital.
Due to vascular complications, he was subsequently moved to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and later to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, where he received treatment for three months.
Dr Md Abu Jafor said that Murad was initially on life support but is now in a relatively stable condition. However, all four of his limbs are paralyzed.
“He can communicate through gestures. We are primarily sending him abroad for physiotherapy," he added.
The interim government has previously sent five other individuals abroad for medical treatment.
