Justice and accountability will be ensured for every killing, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus promises

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has said the initiatives his administration has taken to investigate the killings during July and August are progressing well, noting that Dhaka will also demand the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India.

In his address to the nation on Sunday to mark 100 days of governance, Yunus said justice and accountability would be ensured for every killing.

"You are aware of the dire situation under which we had to take charge. Following an unprecedented mass uprising by students, workers and the public, the fascist leader (Hasina) fled, leaving the country temporarily without a government.

“During this time, the police and administration became completely inactive, creating an alarming situation. We all now have the responsibility of rebuilding a nation devastated by autocratic rule. After the July-August uprising, we inherited a country in total disarray."

The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Yunus, assumed power on August 8 following the fall of the government of Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India amid a student-led mass uprising.

Referring to the toll of the uprising, the chief adviser noted that nearly 1,500 students, workers and civilians had been martyred.

"Our government is meticulously gathering information on every single death,” Yunus said, adding that the protests had left 19,931 individuals injured.
