Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has called for the banning of the Awami League for genocide and the removal of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
In a statement issued to the media on Tuesday, the party’s Ameer Muhibullah Babunagari and Secretary-General Maulana Sajidur Rahman made the demand.
The Hefazat leaders said that although the current president had previously acknowledged receiving the resignation letter of the former illegal prime minister in a national address, he recently contradicted himself in an interview by denying it, violating his oath.
They further said they consider the president, a loyalist of Sheikh Hasina, an enemy of the July Revolution and demand his immediate removal.
The Hefazat-e-Islam leaders also praised the interim government for canceling National Day on March 7 and Mourning Day on August 15.
They demanded that the interim government ban the Awami League and its affiliated organizations for the massacres during the BDR mutiny, the May 5 Shapla Chattar incident, and the 2021 and 2024 student-people protests.
They argued that failing to ban the Awami League has allowed Awami fascism to continue its counter-revolutionary conspiracies.
According to them, banning the Awami League is essential for consolidating and ensuring the success of the revolution led by students and the people.
