Bangladesh Mahila Parishad has condemned the torture of an underage domestic help by her employer at a house in the capital’s Vatara area recently.

In a statement issued on Monday, the non-governmental orgarnisation said the news of the torture of Kalpana Akhter, 13, was published in the Daily Samakal. It mentioned that her employer, Dinat Jahan Ador, tortured the domestic help at a house in Block I of Road No. 3 in Vatara. She used to torture her with iron rods and burn her skin with hair straighteners. Two months ago, Ador beat her mercilessly, after which Kalpana lost four teeth.

On Saturday, the girl was taken to a doctor for medical treatment, where the doctor got suspicious and informed the police and journalists of the matter. Police later recovered Kalpana and admitted her to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors said she needs seven surgeries.

A delegation of the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad also visited the girl at the hospital, where doctors said that she was also suffering from blood deficiency. The delegation then promised to take legal action against the culprit in favour of Kalpana. They also said the Mahila Parishad would give the girl shelter after her medical treatment and take care of her.

Mahila Parishad has demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits and urged the authorities to take effective measures to prevent such violence in the future.

In the statement, Mahila Parishad expressed concern at the alarming rise in violence on domestic help across the country and demanded the formulation of a complete law for their protection.
