Energy Adviser: Gas, electricity prices will be set by BERC

All procurement in the energy sector will be conducted through open tenders, rather than collusive practices

Update : 20 Oct 2024, 04:36 PM

Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, said that from now on, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) will determine the prices of gas and electricity through public hearings, not the government.

He made this statement at an energy-related seminar held at a hotel in the capital on Sunday afternoon.

Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan mentioned that the government plans to drill 50 exploration wells by 2025.

Going forward, all procurement in the energy sector will be conducted through open tenders, rather than collusive practices.

Speaking about the interim government, he said that political parties are keen to know how long it will last, but this will leave little time for significant reforms in the energy and power sectors by the current administration.

The adviser also highlighted that it is currently the season for negotiating demands, similar to harvesting crops, mentioning that the justified demands of the Rural Electrification Board have been addressed.

The request to regularize temporary employees is under consideration, and a decision will be made after a thorough evaluation.

He added that sudden announcements cannot be made without proper assessment.
