Govt plans to import another 45m eggs

Approval is being granted to 12 organizations for this purpose

Update : 17 Oct 2024, 06:15 PM

The interim government has planned to import an additional 45 million eggs to increase supply.

Approval is being granted to 12 organizations for this purpose.

The Ministry of Commerce is expected to finalize a decision regarding the egg importation.

On 8 October, the interim government allowed seven companies to import 45 million eggs; however, only a few eggs have arrived.

The import process was interrupted due to a four-day government holiday, leading to insufficient egg imports, according to related institutions.

Recently, the price of eggs in the market has increased several times, reaching Tk180-190 per dozen for farm eggs in Dhaka.

However, on Wednesday, prices saw a slight decline, with eggs selling for Tk160 per dozen in major markets of Dhaka and Tk170 in local neighborhoods.

The Directorate of Agricultural Marketing recently set a “reasonable price” for eggs.

The price is set at Tk10.58 at the production stage, Tk11.01 at the wholesale stage, and Tk11.87 at the retail stage (equivalent to Tk142.44 per dozen).

Vendors have reported a supply shortage of eggs in the market, which has contributed to the price hike.

According to the Livestock Directorate, the daily demand for eggs in the country is around 50 million.

Meanwhile, to increase supply and control prices, corporate entities have announced they will supply 2 million eggs daily to the two main wholesale markets in Tejgaon and Kaptan Bazar.

Supply started from Thursday at Kaptan Bazar.

The main coordinating body for this initiative is the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC), which claims that although the initiative begins in Dhaka, its effects will be felt nationwide.
