July-August trial: Journalists protest ban on mobile phones at ICT

SRF president says mobile phones are allowed even inside Supreme Court

Update : 17 Oct 2024, 03:26 PM

Journalists have reported being barred from entering the courtroom of the International Criminal Tribunal for the July-August mass killings trials with mobile phones.

As the tribunal began its proceedings on Thursday, journalists attempted to enter the courtroom with their mobile phones.

Personnel on duty at the gate informed them that mobile phones and electronic devices were prohibited. They were instructed to leave their phones outside to gain entry, leading to protests from the journalists.

In response, Masudur Rahman, president of the Supreme Court Reporters Forum (SRF), said: “We are permitted to enter the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division with mobile phones, as it is the highest court in the country. We demand the same access to the tribunal. We call for the withdrawal of the ban on journalists bringing mobile phones into the tribunal during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina’s government.”
