Former MP MA Awal of Lakshmipur has been arrested by the Kalabagan police from the capital.
He was arrested in connection with a fraud case.
Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Public Relations and Media Branch, confirmed the matter on Wednesday.
“We have arrested Awal, also managing director (MD) of Havelly Property Ltd, from the office of the Havelly Group office at Sultana Tower at Kalabagan in connection with a fraudulence case at 5pm today."
A team of Kalabagan Police Station arrested Awal along with Nabakumar, an accountant of the property, following a court order passed on Wednesdday in connection with the cheating case.
MA Awal is the chairman of the Islamic Democratic Party and a former general secretary of the Tariqat Federation.
While serving as the general secretary of the Tariqat Federation, he was nominated as a parliamentary candidate for the Awami League's boat symbol in the 10th National Parliament elections held on January 5, 2014, as part of the 14-party alliance.
