Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has said that since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, no one in Bangladesh has been a victim of extrajudicial killing.
He made this claim on Saturday at an event held in the inner garden of the Supreme Court’s main building.
The attorney general said: "You will be pleased to know that from July 36 (August 5) to today, no one in Bangladesh has fallen victim to extrajudicial killing. The primary credit for this goes to our esteemed professor, Dr Asif Nazrul, under whose leadership this has been achieved."
He continued: "According to data from domestic and international organizations, more than 4,000 people were victims of extrajudicial killings at the hands of law enforcement agencies between 2009 and July 36 (August 5), 2024. Over 700 people were forcibly disappeared. More than six million people were named as defendants in fabricated cases. The darkest history of suppressing dissent was written by curtailing freedom of speech, the right to assemble, and other fundamental rights."
He added: "We are deeply concerned that some judges, who previously played a role in suppressing people's rights as accomplices to fascism, still hold important positions. If this continues, it will send a wrong message to the nation. I especially urge the legal advisor and the office of the chief justice to remain vigilant in this regard."
The state's top legal officer also called for addressing the necessary problems faced by judges.
