Update : 17 Sep 2024, 10:48 PM

The government has granted the Bangladesh Army the authority of special executive magistrate across the country.

Under the provisions of Section 12(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code of 1898, commissioned officers of the army have been given executive magistrate powers for a period of 60 days.

This decision was announced in a notification from the Ministry of Public Administration on Tuesday.

According to the gazette notification issued by the ministry, eligible army officers will serve as executive magistrates under the supervision of district magistrates nationwide.

These army magistrates will oversee activities related to offences under Sections 65, 83, 84, 86, 95(2), 100, 105, 107, 109, 110, 126, 127, 128, 130, 133, and 142 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898.

In response to large-scale clashes during the quota reform protests, the Sheikh Hasina government deployed the army and imposed a nationwide curfew on July 19.

The government was overthrown in a student-led mass uprising on August 5, and an interim administration led by Dr Muhammad Yunus assumed control on August 8.
