Bangladesh Mahila Parishad has expressed deep concern and outrage over the recent incidents of violence and killings of women and girls in various districts across the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Mahila Parishad highlighted several media reports detailing these incidents.
The organization gave examples of several incidents. In Rajapur village of Amta union, Dhamrai upazila in Manikganj, a housewife was doused in kerosene and set on fire by her husband following a domestic dispute. In the Thanaghata area of Labsa union, Satkhira, an intellectually challenged girl was beaten to death with a hammer for playing loud music.
Rajina Sultana was walking along the road listening to music when Ilyas Hossain, a local resident, objected to the noise. An altercation ensued, leading to her being fatally assaulted with a hammer, Mahila Parishad said.
"In Kuakata of Patuakhali, the body of a young woman was found hanging in a residential area. According to sources, she had been visiting Kuakata on Friday, and when she did not respond from her room on Saturday, police found her hanging from a ceiling fan. In Sreepur municipality in Gazipur, Rubel Mia allegedly beat his wife, Mahmuda Akhtar, to death on September 10, after suspecting her of infidelity.
"In a separate incident, a husband killed his wife in Chauja Uttarpara village, Tentulia union, Manda upazila in Naogaon, during a family dispute. In Thakurgaon, a woman was subjected to physical torture and attempted murder after being lured into a marriage. Meanwhile, in Ulipur, Kurigram, a man attempted to rape a woman while she was attending to her husband at a clinic.
"Additionally, a woman was publicly harassed and physically assaulted on Cox's Bazar beach, with the video of the incident circulating on social media."
The Mahila Parishad noted that incidents of violence against women and girls are on the rise, with many victims subjected to horrific torture and murder. Such violence is severely hindering the safety and well-being of women and girls.
The organization demanded immediate legal action against the perpetrators of these violent acts and urged the relevant authorities to take necessary measures to address the issue.
The Mahila Parishad also called for a coordinated social movement involving individuals, families, and society to prevent violence against women and girls.
