According to the press release, a student-mass uprising has been organized against the fascist regime under the leadership of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and with the participation of people from all walks of life in Bangladesh.
“In exchange for the sacrifice of thousands of martyrs and injured students and people, we have been liberated and a government of people's aspirations has been formed. The declared goal of the coup is the abolition of the fascist system and the new political settlement still demands a long political and policy-making struggle,” it added.
The release added: “The people of Bangladesh have repeatedly expressed their aspirations through the Pakistan Movement of 1947, the Great War of Liberation in 1971 and the upsurge of the students and people this time. Even the mass movement of 1990 could not present the people before the nation any fruitful solution or settlement in the long run. But the experience of previous struggles tells us that whenever the freedom-loving people entrust the responsibility of running the state to an individual or a group, there is a lack of responsibility and accountability towards the people.”
Although the government of the student uprising was formed, the previous fascist system is still active as a rival to the success of the people.
“The ruins of the repressive state apparatus are hindering the restructuring of the state at every step. As a result, we pledge to perform our civic duty to organize the people who took to the streets through the uprising of the students and people, to cooperate simultaneously with the government formed on August 8 and to bring them under accountability, as well as to play a role in formulating policies in favour of the public interest,” the press release said.
“We think that the spirit of solidarity and resistance of the students and people is the power to build Bangladesh anew. This new political masses must achieve complete victory through a stable and peaceful political settlement. Proper trial of mass murderers, restructuring of state institutions, and policy-making sensitive to the public interest are prerequisites for the new political settlement,” it added.
The Jatiya Nagorik Committee is starting work by forming a convening committee. Soon, they will hold discussions with the social, cultural and religious leaders and people of different classes who participated in the uprising of students and people at all metropolitan, district and upazila levels.
By expanding this committee to the grassroots, they said they would work for the reconstruction of the state of Bangladesh by consolidating the power of student uprising.
Primary Functions of the Convening Committee
The committee is designed to uphold the collective intentions and democratic aspirations reflected through the upsurge of the students and people.
They would take necessary programs to ensure the punishment of those involved in the brutal killings of students and people.
The committee aims to work to mobilize people of all walks of life through discussion, exchange of views and pro-people programs with various social, cultural and political initiatives.
They would continue resistance against fascist structures and forces with a view to upholding the aspiration of mass upsurge by integrating social, cultural and religious leaders at all levels of the country.
They would also organize thematic dialogues with people of different classes and professions and expatriate Bangladeshis to determine the policy in favour of the public interest.
The committee would also formulate necessary policy proposals for restructuring state institutions and take necessary political steps to implement them, establish a Constituent Assembly, and organize a mass discussion to create a new democratic constitution through a referendum.
The Jatiya Nagorik Committee urges the people of Bangladesh to remain united in their respective areas subject to the scope and method of the work. The process of organizing district and upazila, area-based discussions and view exchange meetings will start soon.
The spontaneous participation of the masses will become the driving force to protect the desire for the coup.
