Update : 08 Sep 2024, 01:30 PM

Mohammad Tajul Islam, the newly appointed chief prosecutor for handling cases on behalf of the state at the International Crimes Tribunal, has said that the main accused in most of the genocide cases, Sheikh Hasina, will be brought back to the country and tried before the tribunal.

He made these comments during a press conference at the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday, following his assumption of office.

The chief prosecutor said: "The primary challenge is to collect all evidence related to the genocides that occurred in July and August. We will ensure justice for everyone involved in the genocide, and the trials will be conducted in a manner acceptable to all parties."

Tajul Islam added that the prosecution team will apply for the arrest of the accused during the investigation. “Although I previously worked as a defense lawyer for the accused at the tribunal, there are no legal complications in fighting the case on behalf of the state now. The appointment of tribunal judges will be expedited."

The newly appointed prosecution team said that they would meet with the interim government’s investigative agency to determine the next steps.

The issue of listing 29 journalists in one case will be reviewed, they said.
