The contractor responsible for toll collection and operation of the Jamuna Bridge, the second-largest bridge in Bangladesh, has been replaced.
Following a tender process, China Road and Bridge Corporation Company has been awarded a five-year contract to manage the toll collection and operation, offering a 20.21% saving from the estimated price.
The company's operations began at 12am on Sunday.
On their first day, they decided to increase the number of Fast Track booths from one to seven to expedite vehicle crossings.
Bangladesh Bridge Authority Director (Finance and Accounts) Altaf Hossain Sheikh confirmed the decision.
Officials from the Setu Bhaban visited the Jamuna Bridge on Sunday to oversee the transition to the new contractor.
The estimated cost for the bridge’s toll collection and operation was Tk74.75 crore, while the contractor company bid of China Road and Bridge Corporation came in at Tk96.63 crore. This will save the Bangladesh government Tk15.11 crore from the estimated cost.
The new contractor will manage toll collection and related activities with its workforce.
