Under influence of full moon, pressure of water flow and downpour of rainy season, all major rivers from upstream to downstream have been flowing above the danger level in southern Barisal region.
Abdul Hannan, additional chief engineer of the Barisal divisional office of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) confirmed the report.
Locals and BWDB sources said that low-lying areas of Barisal city have been submerged by one to two feet of water due to this.
Heavy rain, with only brief pauses since morning, has disrupted public life.
BWDB office sources said that water levels have increased in all the rivers of Barisal division for several days due to the influence of full moon high tide.
The situation is worse in Bhola district.
Meghna River has been flowing crossing a maximum danger level of 92 cm at Tajumaddin point in Bhola district.
The Bhola district administration has admitted that the low-lying areas, river banks, and shoals outside the embankment of Bhola district town have been inundated due to Heavy rain, with only brief pauses since morning, which has disrupted public life.
Bhola district deputy commissioner Muhammad Arifuzzaman said that due to the full moon, tide, and heavy rains, the low-lying and shoal areas are flooded and drowning in the tide.
Several houses were flooded, especially in Monpura Upazila of Bhola district.
The Sub Divisional Engineer of the BWDB Tajul Islam said the water level of almost all major rivers continued to rise due to high tide.
Bhola Sadar Upazila fishermen Abul Hasim said that due to the high tide, water has entered in the houses along the river bank area, roads and houses.
The highest water level rise has been recorded at Tajumuddin Point on the Meghna River, with water flowing 92 cm above the danger level.
Besides, the Meghna river at Daulatkhan point has been flowing at 74 cm above the danger level.
Meanwhile, Bishkhali river has been flowing 20 cm above the danger level at Patharghata , 14 cm above the danger level at Barguna point, 3 cm above the danger level at Amtali Point and 12 cm above the danger level at Mirjaganj Point under Barguna district.
Tetulia River has been flowing above 9 cm of danger level at Bhola Kheyaghat point, Bishkhali river 20 cm above at Betagi point, 14 cm above at Jhalokathi point, Kirtankhola River above 10 cm at Barisal River port point.
