Protesters occupy Dhanmondi 32 to block Awami League march

Checking anyone they suspect of being affiliated with Awami League

Update : 15 Aug 2024, 12:58 PM

To prevent Awami League’s "march to Dhanmondi 32" program to pay homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, students and the general public have occupied the area since midnight.

No central Awami League leaders have been seen at Dhanmondi 32 since Thursday morning.

The protesting students and citizens have gathered near Metro Shopping Mall, extending from the Shukrabad intersection.

A significant military presence is on the ground to maintain law and order, supported by police and BGB personnel.

Meanwhile, students and locals are on alert, checking anyone they suspect of being affiliated with the Awami League, especially if they were seen wearing black panjabi.

In the morning, a car that had been vandalized was found at the traffic intersection near Dhanmondi Road 32.

Witnesses said that the vehicle was targeted due to suspicions of its association with the Awami League. The car's owner was not present at the scene.

Earlier in the day, a group of four to five youths attempted to approach Bangabandhu's house but were intercepted by students and locals.

They were later restrained with ropes in front of New Model Degree College, across from Dhanmondi 32. One of the individuals had his Punjabi torn off during the incident.

Additionally, a man was seen using a microphone near the area, urging the public to report any suspected miscreants to the authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands.

Thursday marks the 49th martyrdom anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On this day in 1975, Bangabandhu and most of his family were brutally gunned down by disgruntled members of the army.
